Spring and Birds…

Now that we just got our 25+” of snow in a few days, spring will soon be here.  With Spring Sunflower Pest Solutions will be getting numerous calls for birds squawking in attics.  Take a moment to walk around your house and look up.  Look for gaps where the roof meets the soffit, or overhang, and any other gaps you may see.

You see Starlings are a nuisance pest bird and they nest in cavities.  They come in by the hundreds in the spring and seem to find any gap leading into your attic they can find.  They then lay their eggs, and when they hatch they cannot fly for a couple of weeks.  When the young birds get hungry they yell for Mom!  If they are above your bedroom they can get quite annoying.  We can remove birds, and repair the gap or hole they are getting in to.

Starlings also have a trait known as haystacking, and they will try to fill the area up with grass, twigs, and debris even trash to make a nest.  I have personally removed 33 large bags out of 1 attic with all the nesting debris.  Now just think if the bird brings a cigarette butt that is still hot up in your attic….POOF!  Yes at Sunflower Pest Solutions we can also remove the nesting debris and clean up the attic.  If it gets bad enough we can remove soiled insulation and add new back.

Raccoon and Squirrel young will arrive soon

AAAhhhhh, spring is on its way!  With the arrival of spring, we will start getting calls for noises in the attic.  If you hear a noise in your attic it could be one of several things.  The most common we see at Sunflower Pest Solutions, is Squirrels, Raccoon, and Bats probably in that order.  Now is a good time to walk around your home and check for gaps.

Squirrels are rodents and chew on everything, they can chew on soffits, roofs, louvre vents, guttering, sprinkler heads, termite bait stations, outdoor furniture, and even gas lines for grills, and electrical wiring.  We can trap and remove the offending animal and repair the damage that they have done in most cases.  If we cannot repair it we can normally refer someone trustworthy to you.  Squirrels have their first litter of the year normally in February or March.

Raccoons are also very good climbers and have hands similar to ours so they can actually rip off shingles on roofs, and pull at wood rot.  Raccoons can also get in chimneys to have young.  They are larger animals so it may sound like a person walking around in your attic. They normally have a “latrine” area so the droppings can get out of control if it happens to be in your attic.  At Sunflower Pest Solutions we can trap the Raccoons and repair the damage and if needed remove insulation and droppings in attic, and blow in new insulation. Raccoons can have young any time from the end of February to April.  One problem we run into with Raccoons is when the young start to wander around an attic is they sometimes fall down wall voids and get stuck.  This usually results in one of two things; if you do not hear it crying it will die if mom can’t get to it, or we have to cut a hole in the wall to remove it.

Skunks-breeding season is here

skunk

Skunks, we’ve all smelled them.  You certainly know when they are in the neighborhood.  At least you do when it is breeding season.  Skunks normally only spray as a defense mechanism as they don’t even like their own smell.  In Kansas City skunks breeding season is normally January-February.

Skunks are in the weasel family, and are very good burrowers.  They like to dig under our porches, sidewalks, and driveways for protection.  When breeding season comes around, the males can roam several miles at night and breed with as many females as possible.  If two males meet up they sometimes fight, and make loud noises similar to cats or a woman screaming.  This is when they let out a fragrant spray and people call us.

If you see digging around your porches, sidewalks, driveways, etc. call us at 913-244-3682.        For more info also visit our website.  If you decide to wait until spring, you could have 2-10 young skunks also residing near your home.  The average litter size is 6 but can vary.

We are Kansas City, Olathe, Overland Park, Leawood, Shawnee, Merriam, Mission, Mission Hills, Westwood, Westwood Hills skunk trappers.  We have the right traps, they are enclosed so skunks do not spray.  For odor free skunk removal in Kansas City call now.

Squirrels Invading Attics

With the cooler temperatures, squirrels are coming to an attic near you!  The summer was so hot in the Kansas City Metro the squirrels didn’t want to be in the hot attics.  The weather has cooled off, and they have made their way into attics for the winter.  Squirrels are either having young right now or recently had a litter.

So if you are hearing noises in your attic, normally in the early morning and early evening it could be squirrels.  They usually sound like something is running in attic, and sometimes you will hear a scratching noises or chewing.  Be careful they do like to chew on wiring and that can become a fire hazard.

At Sunflower Pest Solutions we can handle your squirrel issue, and safely remove them from your attic, or walls.  We can also repair most damage, and install or remove insulation if needed.  They can contaminate insulation with urine and feces, and trample it down to where the R-value is greatly reduced.

Kansas City Pest Control – Fall preparation

In KC fall is heading in.  With fall temperatures can drop at night and be rather nice during the day.  This weather “triggers” insects, spiders, and mammals to prepare for winter.  Insects like wasps begin producing queens, and they leave the nest to survive the winter.  Other insects like box elder bugs, asian lady beetles, flies, etc., can look for gaps, cracks and crevices to overwinter.  Look on the south and west sides of the house as it usually remains warmer in the winter.

Take a minute and walk around your home, look up near the roof and soffits for gaps that squirrels, mice and raccoons could get in YOUR attic!  Look down around any gas, water and electrical penetrations also as this is a common entry for rodents, and sometimes even snakes.  Check around basement windows for gaps, and front porches where skunks love to burrow.

This year in Kansas City we have had an extremely hot and dry summer.  What that means is that the soil shrank without moisture.  There was a lot of foundations that settled, causing cracks.  It only takes a small crack to allow in snakes, or mice, and only 1/64th of an inch for termites and ants to get in!

If you have a pond the water is likely way down also.  Check around for large holes in the bank which could be a sign of Muskrats or Beaver damaging it.  Also look for trees with chewing around it, if it’s Beaver you won’t miss it!  These large rodents cause a lot of damage.

What ever your dealing with we can devise a solution!  We can even clean out gutters and install gutter covers to prevent clogging, mosquitoes, and wood rot.  If your attic feels drafty we can install TAP insulation and if needed remove the old.

Brown Recluse Spiders on the move

Wow!  What a winter we had in Kansas City!  One of the warmest on record.  It is nice not to have to shovel snow every other day.  However, with all the warm weather we may pay the price this spring and summer with some pests, especially the highly feared Brown Recluse Spider.  More info

Normally in the mid-west, and Kansas City area, the Brown Recluse Spider goes semi-dormant in the winter months and may not feed for 2-4 months.  When they come out of their dormant slumber, they are pretty weak from not eating for extended periods.  However, this year with most of our winter in the 40s and 50s during the day, the Brown Recluse Spider, like many other pests did not need to camp out while we were in a deep freeze.
This is Bad News for homeowners who have never had a Brown Recluse treatment. Why, you ask?  Well, the females were more than likely able to lay an egg sac over the winter months that normally would not have happened.  Which means in the spring, twice as many eggs could potentially hatch.  That does not mean they will, but it is something we have to be prepared for.  Each Brown Recluse egg sac contains on average 40-80 eggs.
How do you know if you have Brown Recluse Spiders?  Go to our website and then go to photos to see some examples of what they look like.  Brown Recluse spiders will leave their skin behind kind of like a snake.  So if you see shed skins that look like empty spiders, that is one sign.  Another sign is to look for webbing that is flat against the wood, it looks similar to white cotton candy.  If you see them out running around, you more than likely have a large population.  Good places to look for signs are in the garage, unfinished areas of the basement, and attics.  If we can help please call us!

Rodents and Foundations

It’s winter, even though it has been relatively mild, rodents still make their way in homes.  Over the years in Kansas City I have noticed a trend in older ranch homes.  Most of these homes built in the 1940′s – 1970′s with basements have foundation issues.  After years and years these foundations move, pushing the sill plate (what the house sits on) off the foundation.  When this happens, a gap can be created and mice, rats, and even chipmunks can get inside your basement.  If you have a finished basement with drop ceilings or sheet-rock ceilings you may hear noises on the ceilings.  Once rodents get in they can usually find their way right up the sewer line hole that your sink drains through.  This is how they end up in the kitchen.

There can be other entry areas that rodents can get in such as woodrot, construction gaps, gaps under concrete slabs, wood missing or falling off cantilevers (overhangs), and even roof level gaps such as where your soffit meets your roof.  Hire a professional that knows what to look for such as Sunflower Pest Solutions.  Rodents can and do chew on wiring, food, and damage materials.  Please follow us on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn.  If we can help you with your Kansas City rodent issue, or Kansas City Squirrel infestation please let us know.  Also check out our YouTube page.

Large Wasps!!

Late in the summer, when the weather gets hot and the ground gets dry, you may begin seeing Large Wasps flying around your yard or property.  These are called Cicada Killers.  They are actually a beneficial wasp, but due to their extreme large size they can frighten people, especially children.  These wasps will dig or burrow a small hole in the yard kicking out dirt, so they have a cavity to lay their egg.  They will go off and sting a Cicada (the loud annoying insects) and bring it back paralyzed so when the egg hatches it has Live prey to eat!  If these wasps get out of control, call Sunflower Pest Solutions, your Kansas City Wasp Control Experts.

Birds & Bees

Can birds and bees really clog dryer vents?  The answer is YES!  If you have ever done laundry and it seems to take forever for your clothes to dry or if moisture is dripping back in dryer, it could be clogged.  Birds love to get inside the dryer vents and build nests which then block lint.  Dryer vent is very flammable.  I have personally removed literally hundreds of birds/nests from dryer vents.  I have also removed Honey Bees, Bumble Bees, Yellow Jackets, mice, rats, and even a pet ferret.  If we can assist please call Sunflower Pest Solutions, we can also install new dryer vents.

Picnic Time

Ok it’s now picnic time, and you’re trying to enjoy the outdoors, but the pesky yellow jackets are trying to share your food and drinks!  What to do now?  Well if you have an empty 2 liter bottle, or even a small 20 oz. plastic bottle you can cut the top off right at the top of the label.  Now take the top off that looks like an oil fill spout, and flip it upside down and put it back in the bottle.  You can fill it with an inch or so of sweet juice, soda, beer or what ever, and you just made a yellow jacket trap out of trash!  Set it to the side and watch the wasps go in for a sweet drink, and they cannot get out.  Here is a photo of one:  As always if we can be of assistance, go to our http://www.sunflowerpest.com website, packed full of info.
